The Schnauzer
A schnauzer is a breed of dog that originated in Germany in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the name comes from the German word for “snout”, because__ (1. With B. of C. in) the dogs distinctively bearded snout. There are three sizes of Schnauzers, giant, standard, miniature. The first of these dogs which (2. A. came B. come C. comes) to England were the smaller ones, over 50 years ago, and the Giant Schnauzer has not (3. A. being B. be C. been) here very long. It is called the Giant because it can grow to over 60 cm high. They all (4.A. has B. have C. had) long hair, and the smaller dogs (5. A. were B. is C. are) usually grey (6. A. or B. if C. but) the giants are usually black. In their native Germany, farmers use (7. A. them B. him C. us) to help with the sheep, and they are also used (8. A. from B. by C. to) the police, because of their intelligence.

HANNAH

My name's Hannah and I'm twenty years old. I've got a daughter (1. A. calls B. called C. names) Nicole. She's (2. A. nearly B. quite C. yet) three now. I live in a small flat (3. A. in B. on C. at) the city centre. It isn't a nice place to live. It's very noisy and dirty and there is (4. A. somewhere B. anywhere C. nowhere) for Nicole to play.

I want to move out of the city and live in the countryside. But it's very expensive to live there. I will need to earn (5. A. any B. this C. enough) money to buy a house. There aren't (6. A. much B. lot C. many) flats for sale in the small villages near here. I will need to buy a car (7. A. too B. also C. then).

That's why I study at college. I'm studying Business. While I am at college, my mum looks (8. A. for B. after C. at) Nicole. My mum really likes spending time with her. In the evening, I work as a cleaner. I clean people's houses. Nicole comes with me. She plays (9. A. quiet B. quieter C. quietly) with her toys while I work.
